Anticipatory Set

The teacher will display the following passage, with blanks, on the board.[^1] Students will need to read the passage and fill in the blanks with one of the six vocabulary words for "The Tell-Tale Heart."

As I dribbled the soccer ball up the field, I felt a sudden, (1) ____ pain in my stomach. I wanted to cry out in (2) ____, but I refused to let the cramp (3) ____ me. I drowned out the pain and focused instead on the cheering of the crowd and my coach's advice as she shouted from the sidelines, "Shoot the ball!"

The teacher will take attendance as students complete the activity. After sufficient time has elapsed, the class will review the passage and fill in the correct vocabulary words. The class will then review the agenda and objectives.

Developmental Activity

The teacher will introduce information about Edgar Allan Poe, focusing specifically on the macabre nature of his work. The class will then begin reading aloud from "The Tell-Tale Heart," using the Equity Sticks strategy to switch off readers on a paragraph-by-paragraph basis. The teacher will pause to explain key vocabulary, to check for understanding, and to highlight stylistic features and choices Poe makes to create the tone.

Closure

With five to ten minutes left in the period, the teacher will stop the reading and have students begin the "The Tell-Tale Heart" Reading Check assignment. The expectation is that the class will finish reading the story in the following lesson.
