🗒️ Lesson Plan

Anticipatory Set

As a bellringer, the teacher will show the short film "Hair Love." After viewing, the teacher will invite students to Turn & Talk with a peer about possible themes and thematic statements for the short. The teacher will take attendance as students discuss. Once sufficient discussion time has elapsed, the teacher will invite pairs to share their ideas with the whole group. The class will then review the agenda and objectives.

Developmental Activity

The class will finish reading "Hansel and Gretel" aloud. Students will then engage in a Turn & Talk around the following discussion questions:

Why do Hansel and Gretel’s parents decide to abandon their children in the woods? Was it fair of them to do so? What roles and responsibilities do parents have to their children?

How do Hansel and Gretel survive the various perilous situations they are placed in? What character traits do they show throughout the story?

How does the witch first present herself to Hansel and Gretel? How does this first impression hold up as the children spend more time in the witch’s home?

Was Gretel right to kill the witch? Why or why?

The teacher will provide students time to discuss then invite the class to share responses with the whole group.

Closure

Any remaining class time will be provided to students to complete the "Hansel and Gretel" Reading Check assignment.
