🗒️ Lesson Plan
Anticipatory Set
In small groups, students will complete a Sentence Scramble activity. This can be completed by writing, using index cards (one word per card), on individual student whiteboards, or moving elements (one per word) on a digital tool like Google Slides.
- Nya's younger sister is sick from drinking dirty water.
- Nya worries about her family members getting sick again.
- Salva is traumatized by the loss of his friend.
- Salva clings to Uncle after Marial dies. / After Marial dies, Salva clings to Uncle.
- Salva helps the group build boats.
- Salva must survive hundreds of mosquitos when crossing the Nile River.
- Salva will cross the Akobo desert in the next chapter.
- We are almost halfway through the book.
As students work, the teacher will take attendance and circulate to support students as they work. Once sufficient time has elapsed, groups should share out their sentences. Alternatively, time permitting, groups can rotate between different sentence stations to complete multiple scrambles.
Developmental Activity
The class will then read aloud Chapter 9 & 10. The teacher will use the Equity Sticks strategy to select readers on a paragraph-by-paragraph basis. The teacher will pause the reading to check for understanding, introduce new vocabulary, or explain unfamiliar concepts.
Closure
After reading, students will Turn & Talk, using the following questions.
- What holds Salva together? What keeps him going?
- In Chapter 9, Salva's group encounters men dying of thirst in the desert. A woman wants to help them, but a man feels that the group must take care of themselves. Who do you agree with? What do you think you would do in this situation?
- Salva's uncle tells him that he will "make a kind of family" at the refugee camp. Is family just who you are related to biologically? Why or why not?
⚙️ Modifications
If in a co-taught class, a co-teacher should pull a small group of students to work together on the refugee article and questions and provide relevant small group interventions/support.
