🗒️ Lesson Plan

Anticipatory Set

Students will refresh their knowledge of Chapter 2 in the following Turn & Talk:

In Chapter 2, Ponyboy (and the reader!) learn more about the Socs through Cherry.

What, if anything, does Ponyboy have in common with the Socs?

Why is Ponyboy able to talk so freely and openly with Cherry despite their differences?

Predict: What do you think will happen between Ponyboy and Cherry? Explain your rationale.

The teacher will take attendance as students discuss then circulate to monitor conversations. After sufficient time has elapsed, the teacher will invite students to share their ideas with the whole class. The class will then review the agenda and objectives.

Developmental Activity

The class will then read aloud from Chapter 3, aiming to read through as much as possible before end of the period. The teacher will use the Equity Sticks strategy to select readers on a paragraph-by-paragraph basis. The teacher will pause the reading to check for understanding, introduce new vocabulary, or explain unfamiliar concepts.

Closure

The teacher will stop the read aloud with a few minutes left to allow students to begin working on Outsiders Reading Check #2. Students should complete as much as they can with what they have read of the chapter; reading will resume in the following lesson.

⚙️ Modifications

If in a co-taught class, a co-teacher may pull a small group of students and read with them in a smaller group setting where more individualized reading interventions may be used.
